Dollar Spot fungus started showing up a couple of weeks ago when we experienced higher temperatures and humidity. The fungus thrives in areas of the lawn where the soil is compacted. When the soil is compacted, the grass on top of it stays wet, yet the soil is dry underneath as it’s unable to absorb the water from above.

I admit when Ornamental Grass first became popular 20 years or so ago, I was pretty late coming to the party. Why would anyone plant a boring old grass when they could plant a colorful, blooming perennial or flowering shrub? I failed to see the allure of ornamental grass when compared to so many other plant options for the landscape. Admittedly, I was wrong in judging grasses so harshly.

Native plants are often talked about among gardeners. Many of us believe that natives are better ecological choices and are more beneficial in providing habitat for native wildlife. Contrary to popular belief, research shows that the “native” status of trees and shrubs has little influence on biodiversity.
